Source of members names: From 1930 until 1990 members' names were published in the Society journal as they joined or became fellows. These sources are shown as a journal abbreviation followed by the year in which the person entered the Society, e.g., ER 1942. (ER = Eugenics Review; Bulletin of the Eugenics Society; B&S = Biology and Society). The Eugenics Review at times listed all the officers and members of the council. These sources are also shown as a journal abbreviation followed by a date. The Society is a corporation and its directors are listed in its annual reports deposited in Company House (CH). In 1937 the Society published a list of members in its Annual Report (ESAR 1937). In 1957 the Society published a list of members in the Eugenics Review (ER 1957). A list of members compiled in 1977 was deposited in the Welcome Archives (1977 list). Deaths of members were sometimes noted in obituaries in the Society journals (Obit + journal abbreviation and date). Other sources are as specified.

Background:
Beit Fellowships were founded by Otto John Beit (1865-1930) in honor of his brother, Alfred Beit (1853-1906).
Alfred Beit was the close friend and adviser of Cecil Rhodes at the time of the amalgamation of the Kimberley Diamond Mines as De Beers Consolidated Mines in 1888. He helped develop the Transvaal gold mines and was an original director of the British South Africa Company. He started railroads. He was an imperialist who founded the Beit Professorship of Colonial history at Oxford.
Alfred and Otto Beit were born in Germany of Jewish descent. Alfred Lane Beit, the son of Otto John, married Clementine Mitford. He was an MP for St Pancras 1931-45 and Secretary of State for the Colonies 1944-45. He was a director of Tanganyika Concessions Ltd. and a Trustee of the Beit Trust, living in County Wicklow, Eire.
A. S. Parkes q.v. was Beit Fellow; Carleton Allen q.v. was Oxford Rhodes Trustee. Bill Clinton and his advisors were Rhodes Scholars (Concise DNB, Debretts 1988)

Personal: b. Croyden, London 1859; d. July 8, 1939
Women:
affair with Olive Schreiner; m. Edith Lees who died in 1916; "affair" with Margaret Sanger ( "...her mentor and lover, Havelock Ellis, was the beloved disciple of Francis Galton, the brilliant cousin of Charles Darwin...", from Grand Illusions., George Grant, p. 53, and p. 91)
Women and Urolagia:
met Mme. Francois Cyon who wrote Friendship's Odyssey by Francois DeLisle (pen name); "he followed me (into the toilet, ed. note) to minister himself to my needs ... Of the full meaning of his delicate attention I was then ignorant ... If urolagia became clearer to me in time, suffice it here to say that, on this first day of closer friendship, it proved mysteriously soothing to my soul."(from Friendship's Odyssey by Francois DeLisle); "he enjoyed married happiness with (Francois Cyon) before his death" from article in Collier's Encyclopediaby Arthur Calder Marshall; Ellis called urolagia, 'the sacrament', and shared it with Margaret Sanger. ( see Havelock Ellis. 1981, Phyllis Grosskurth)
British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) and Havelock Ellis:
Havelock Ellis adopted Francois Lafitte, Francois De Lisle's son. Lafitte became the British Pregnancy Advisory Service chairman.
Lafitte was associated with The Institute of Sex Education and Research because he was Chairman of the BPAS from 1968 -1988 while the BPAS was in partnership with the Institute till 1973.
Pubns:
Sex:
Ellis is best known now for his sexology books, e.g., The Psychology of Sex. 1933; Studies in the Psychology of Sex; More Essays of Love and Virtue. (When Alger Hiss went on his honeymoon, he took with him some of Havelock Ellis's books.)
Race:
He also wrote a great deal on race, eugenics and sterilisation. e.g. "The Sterilisation of the Unfit", ER 1909; The Problems of Race Regeneration.1911 ('persuade' the 'unfit'to 'volunteer' for sterilisation by withdrawing Poor Relief from those who refused such 'persuasion was the theme of Frederick Osborn's "new eugenics" in 1956 and see the arguments for a welfare cap in USA in 1990's); The Task of Social Hygiene.1912; and he wrote a monthly column in Margaret Sanger's Birth Control Review

Destruction of the Unfit:
Speaking of the false teaching of the Pharisees, Christ said "Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire." This quote was popular among eugenicists, who saw it as a justification of their theories of extermination, rather than as a warning against false teaching. Ellis said: "there can be no compunction in his (Christ's) promulgation of this radical yet necessary doctrine of the destruction of unfit stocks.", from The Dance of Life. 1923
Eugenic Strategy:
Speaking of sterilisation, Blacker claims Ellis said: "...It was the business... of the lawyers to find ambiguities and uncertainties in the law. He urged the Society to try by all the means at its disposal to encourage the judicious employment of voluntary sterilisation and thereby get it accepted as part of normal medical practice rather than challenge the organised forces of the opposition by seeking to legalise it by Act of Parliament ... Many unnecessary and unwieldy safeguards might be introduced ... red tape ... that the result would ... be to 'sterilise sterilisation'... Mature consideration of Dr. Havelock Ellis's contentions in this matter has convinced me of their funda mental soundness. An approach is now being made along lines of which he would have approved." Eugenics and Religion:
1909 "... the idea of eugenics must be instilled into the conscience of civilisation like a new religion - a religion of the most lofty and austere, because the most unselfish, morality - a religion which sets before it a sublime ideal; terrestrial, indeed, in its chosen theatre but celestial in its theme. Happy the people by whom this ideal is translated into fact." (Explanation of goals of the Society in the first issue of the Eugenics Review (ER, Vol. 1, no. 1, p. 4)
Eugenics and Natural Selection:
1908-1990 "Man... I conceive it well within his province to replace Natural Selection by other processes that are more merciful and not less effective. This precisely the aim of eugenics." Sir Francis Galton 1908 quoted in The Eugenics Society Aims & Activities 1990, information pamphlet
Eugenics Society Members' Psychology, an inside opinion:
"J.C. Flugel ... had done a large scale study of social attitudes, in collaboration with Dr. Pryns Hopkins (q.v.), ... Typically the subjects of the experiments were members of odd organizations advocating certain changes in the mores and folkways of present day Society, such as the Sunbathing Society, the Eugenic Society, the Fabian Nursery Propaganda Group..."from Rebel with a Cause. On Astrology 1991: "...my provisional and conditional belief in parapsychological phenomena and cosmobiological ones is not the product of senescent credulity but is based on certain facts which critics have been unable to disprove.", from Rebel with a Cause., p. 255
Background:
Scientific Racism:
"Eysenck found that...on average black people obtained significantly lower intelligence quotients than whites ... (because of) his theory that intelligence is predominantly inherited, he claimed that black people are inherently less intelligent than whites ... He developed a method to measure brain waves accurately enough to give a very high correlation with conventional intelligence tests which, if true, would mean that his method of measuring intelligence is as valid and useful as conventional tests." from The Biographical Dictionary of Scientists (Biologists), article on "Eysenck", (ed., D.
