Source of members names: From 1930 until 1990 members' names were published in the Society journal as they joined or became fellows. These sources are shown as a journal abbreviation followed by the year in which the person entered the Society, e.g., ER 1942. (ER = Eugenics Review; Bulletin of the Eugenics Society; B&S = Biology and Society). The Eugenics Review at times listed all the officers and members of the council. These sources are also shown as a journal abbreviation followed by a date. The Society is a corporation and its directors are listed in its annual reports deposited in Company House (CH). In 1937 the Society published a list of members in its Annual Report (ESAR 1937). In 1957 the Society published a list of members in the Eugenics Review (ER 1957). A list of members compiled in 1977 was deposited in the Welcome Archives (1977 list). Deaths of members were sometimes noted in obituaries in the Society journals (Obit + journal abbreviation and date). Other sources are as specified.

Parthenogenetic Activation of Human Eggs:
Peter Braude, Prof. of Obstetrics and Gynecology, St. Thomas Hospital; an egg "comes into contact with a chemical called A23187 ... the egg is fooled into thinking it is fertilised and the normal dividing process of the cell begins ... it behaves just like an embryo, only it isn't. It's still an unfertilised egg ... these eggs cannot develop into an embryo, and usually die after a few days ... During this time we can also extract genetic material from the Parthenotes for developing methods of testing potential hereditary diseases such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease and muscular dystrophy, without the ethical problems of working on embryos" (from article by Jenny Byrne, Today 32/1/91)

Significance
Both before and after World War II one of the chief arguments of eugenicists was that national intelligence was declining due to poor breeding control. This argument rested on the work of psychologists, mainly eugenic society members, who measured intelligence. These psychologists asserted that intelligence was largely fixed by genetic inheritance and could be measured with scientific accuracy.
The most important of these psychologists was Sir Cyril Burt; others were Spearman, Terman, R.B. Cattell (The Fight for Our National Intelligence.1937), and H.J. Eysenck. All these were in the English or American Eugenics Society or both.
In 1969 Arthur Jensen used their work to claim that blacks are genetically inferior in IQ and incapable of benefitting from the same education as whites. During the ensuing controversy Burt's figures were questioned. In 1979 L.S. Hearnshaw, Burt's authorized biographer, stated that Burt's data for most of the post World War II period was fraudulent. ( see Cyril Burt, psychologist, 1979 ) Since Hearnshaw had been a member of the Eugenics Society and President of the British Association of Psychologists, his conclusions were accepted.
Burt's figures were totally interwoven with the work of everyone else in the field. This may be seen from a study of the Science Citation Index where, typically, three or four pages of citations are listed under Burt's name in each yearly volume. Thus, Burt's fraud was not his problrm alone but called the conclusions of the entire field into question.
In 1990 the Galton Institute (i.e. Eugenics Society) and the Rationalist Press Association began to campaign for Burt's rehabilitation. Their argument was that he done in by enemies of a left wing persuasion after his death. In fact he was "done in" by L.S. Hearnshaw, his authorized biographer, a eugenicist and a very distinguished psychologist.
Or perhaps it's time to admit that Burt was done in by Burt. He alone committed the fraud.
Can the field of intelligence testing survive his fraud? Will the Eugenics Society (Galton Institute) apologize to the black community for inadvertently supporting Cyril Burt in his racist fraud? Or will they commit a second fraud of their own by denying and covering up the first, now that Professor Hearnshaw is dead and cannot answer them.
In 1995 in The Bell Curve Charles Murray attempted to use once more Cyril Burt's arguments and those of his disciples, especially Arthur Jensen. He too claims that Burt was done in by a leftist attack, disregarding Hearnshaw's research.

Background:
"...neither Burt nor any of his alleged assistants carried out any field work after 1955 and it is probable that all his data such as it was has been collected prior to his retirement in 1950, most of it indeed prior to the second World War."from Cyril Burt, psychologist, p. 239
