Source of members names: From 1930 until 1990 members' names were published in the Society journal as they joined or became fellows. These sources are shown as a journal abbreviation followed by the year in which the person entered the Society, e.g., ER 1942. (ER = Eugenics Review; Bulletin of the Eugenics Society; B&S = Biology and Society). The Eugenics Review at times listed all the officers and members of the council. These sources are also shown as a journal abbreviation followed by a date. The Society is a corporation and its directors are listed in its annual reports deposited in Company House (CH). In 1937 the Society published a list of members in its Annual Report (ESAR 1937). In 1957 the Society published a list of members in the Eugenics Review (ER 1957). A list of members compiled in 1977 was deposited in the Welcome Archives (1977 list). Deaths of members were sometimes noted in obituaries in the Society journals (Obit + journal abbreviation and date). Other sources are as specified.

Dugald Baird and Eugenic Abortion:
"He ... began offering abortions to women for social reasons." Obit B&S March 1987
Eugenic abortion, Social abortions: "I was greatly influenced by going to lunch in Aberdeen with Professor Sir Dugald Baird, who persuaded me to accept amendments creating a single socio-medical clause rather than a series of individual categories. This I did ..." David Steel on Abortion Act 1967 in Against Goliath.by David Steel p. 53 (autobiography of David Steel)
Packaging Eugenics:
"Freedom is a U-word and together with human rights can be used attractively in presenting an argument ... When ... A.V. Hill ... queried whether the rights of man could be held to include the right to unlimited reproduction he might have appeared to some people to be suggesting a curb, and this might have tended to arouse unfavorable reactions. Sir Dugald Baird put the matter in a more encouraging light when ... he suggested that mankind should be granted another freedom, 'freedom from the tyranny of excessive fertility'... For Sir Dugald this means... contraceptive advice... and tubal ligation ... leading in turn to more independence for the female sex and greater use of their education and skill to benefit the national economy." Quotes:
1933:
"Under the harsh social order which prevailed almost to our own time, those human beings who were manifestly unfitted for the struggle and responsibilities of social life failed to survive. The unfit, the defective and the degenerate were eliminated. But of late at great cost to the community we have not only preserved them, but have also allowed them to propagate their like. I ask you to assent to my own conviction that such blind humanitarianism is neither Christian nor sensible... As we reflect alike upon the sternness of God and upon the freedom of Christ's teaching from any hint of indulgent good nature, we ought to become willing to accept in our social order measures against which religious sentimentality will raise an outcry. If England... is to save herself ... and the world ... she must be racially sound." from Address in Liverpool Cathedral 1933; his text was "Men do not gather grapes of thorns", which was Christ's warning against false prophets and their teaching.
1949:
- Quoted in the Times as saying: " A time was coming when sterilisa tion of the unfit would be essential to England's social organization and might well be the complement of the welfare state... we must get rid of the slovenly, vicious, idle wasters of the community. Unfortunately the welfare state is only too likely to encourage their increase." in Times, speech to Birmingham Rotary Club, Nov. 28, 1949
Euthanasia:
"Many are beginning to think that medically controlled euthanasia for defective children should be an element of our social policy", quoted in Obit ER 1954-56

Welfare for the Rich:
"Sir William Beveridge in his report, recommended a flat rate scheme of family allowances...
